Easter Film festival – Production Diary V

Author: nickkhoo | Filed under: Projects

The film has been made and has been submitted, but I dunno, I always felt like something was missing. Actually I was more concerned that the ending didn’t come across strong enough and that people will end up going “huh? I don’t understand what is going on here?”

*sigh*

In any case, I’ll let the jury decide. I found out that there have been about 150 entries into this years “Art from the Heart film & arts festival” which for an inaugural year, is pretty damn good. The best five entries will be shown at the end of the day (ala tropfest) so 5 out of 150 aren’t bad odds!
[actually Glenn pointed out that only 20% of the 150 entries are films, so its more like 5 out of 30. The odds are getting better by the minute!]

oh and I just want to give a shout out to my sister Peggy who did a remarkable job producing this film. I promise you, if you are any kind of director/creative person, it pays to have a great producer!

okies onto some of the techno babel (yes you normal ppl can read along)

The film was shot in 30p. Which is fine, but I don’t have an awesome frame converter. There are a few ways to convert 30 to 25. One way is to download a preset from Andrew Kramer’s website

www.videocopilot.net

and use that preset in after effects. However the main component for that preset is pixel motion, which if any of you have used before can give some very strange results, particularly when cutting from one shot to another.

pixel motion gone bad

Pixel motion gone bad. you can see the picture warping outside the black frames as it moves from the previous frame and morphs into the next. not good…

Plus pixel motion takes ages to render (it was 9+ hrs for a 4.23 min video!!!), so I decided to ditch that idea.

I decided to resort to using frame blending, which gives some pretty average results, but to the everyday film goer, they probably wouldnt know if anything was up. so I threw it into compressor and voila! Though frame blending has its problems too! But its cheap and fast and it gets the job done.. sorta

ok so on the left is the full 30p frame and on the right is the 25p frame, frame blended. you can kinda see in the 25p frame that Sam is slightly more ghostly due to the program blending between frames to make up missing frames. terrible….

Anyways I made my temp soundtrack in erm… soundtrack pro. so hopefully it will hold up until I get the real in there.

oh and if you want music for your short film and you dont want to use whatever production music, you can go to the mobygratis.com and ask for some music. He has some really good stuff and it’s free as long as you aren’t making any money off of it!

so its really gloomy today. I don’t really want to go outside. but I am really hungry!!!
